Bharat Anand
Henry R. Byers Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School, Moderator

Bharat Anand is a Professor in the Strategy Unit at Harvard Business School, where he teaches Corporate Strategy. He received an AB in Economics, magna cum laude , from Harvard University, and his PhD in Economics from Princeton University. At Princeton, he was nominated to the Princeton Society of Fellows.

Professor Anand's research is in applied and empirical industrial organization, and corporate strategy.

His current research examines competition in information goods markets, with a primary focus on media and entertainment.

Professor Anand has also written several papers on strategies that firms employ to tackle the challenge of "getting paid" when property rights over assets are weak or insecure. In his research, he has examined how firms capture value in these settings. His work examines the financing of R&D, the structure of technology licensing contracts, and the industrial organization of financial intermediation markets.

His work on strategic alliances provided the intellectual platform for Andersen Consulting's Partnership Value Assessment methodology for the valuation of such alliances. His work has been published in various journals in economics and strategy, and he has written numerous case studies.

At Harvard, Anand has also taught the first-year core course in Competition and Strategy, and in several executive education programs. Prior to coming to HBS, he was on the faculty at the Yale School of Management.

Anand lives in Wellesley, MA with his wife, Anju, who is a cardiologist, and their daughter Rhea.

Bhaskar Das
Executive President, The Times of India Group

Mr. Bhaskar Das graduated in 1974 with honours in Political Science from St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta and obtained his Master of Arts Degree in International Relations from Jadavpur University in 1977. Post this he obtained his Master in Business Administration in 1979 from Calcutta University with a specialization in Marketing.

Having stacked up his academic armoury, he joined BCCL as a Management Trainee in 1980. His 28-year stint in the organization has provided him a holistic management exposure inclusive of line function, responsibility of Profit Center as well as Brand management.

As the Executive President of Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. (BCCL), Bhaskar Das is responsible for maximization of the company's volume & value market share, by ensuring quality service to business constituents and driving value innovations.

To harness his marketing acumen, he has also been given the responsibility of being the Chief Brand Mentor for The Economic Times - the largest circulated business daily in the country and among the top three business dailies in the world. As the brand custodian, his responsibility includes intellectual involvement in content, pricing, promotion & distribution with the mandate to enhance the commercial health of the brand.

Being a Board member of BCCL enables him to leverage his skill sets across the Group’s businesses. Apart from being integrally involved in the broad strategic direction of the company, Bhaskar is also on the boards of ZOOM Entertainment Network Ltd. (a television channel), World Wide Media (a BCCL – BBC joint venture company marketing the Group’s magazines) and Vijayanad Printers Ltd. (a recent acquisition of BCCL).

With media being at the center of all his activities, he is also a part of various significant industry bodies. He is currently the Chairman of Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI), a council member at All India Management Association (AIMA), a Board member at Media Research Users' Council (MRUC), President of The Ad Club (Mumbai) and editor of Solus (the Club’s magazine).

Bhaskar has been awarded the ‘Marketing Professional Of The Year’ at the India Brand Summit 2006 and the ‘Outstanding Marketing Professional Of The Year’ at the Indira Marketing Awards 2007. Apart from his professional calling, Bhaskar’s other passion lies in sharing his knowledge and experience of branding & marketing at industry forums and also with the student fraternity at reputed business schools like MIT, IIM, amongst others.

On a personal front, Bhaskar lives with his artist wife – Shomshuklla and their 19 year old son Uditvanu in Mumbai.

Vikram Kaushik
MD & CEO, Tata Sky

Vikram started his career as a Lecturer in History in 1972. He then joined Unilever as a management trainee.

Vikram’s tenure with Lever saw him take up diverse assignments across the businesses in the Company gave him wide exposure both within India and abroad. He managed iconic brands including Lux, Fair & Lovely and Dalda.

In 1989 he joined the advertising industry. Four years later he became VP of Marketing at Britannia a Foods company in a joint venture with Danone. In 2000 he joined Colgate Palmolive as Marketing Director. His team was responsible for reviving the fortunes of the brand Colgate.

Vikram is currently MD & CEO of Tata Sky, a joint venture between the Tata Group and Newscorp, spearheading the Pay TV Direct-to-Home operations.

Vikram has a post graduate degree in Medieval Indian History and modern China.

Arvind Sharma
Chairman, Leo Burnett India

In his role as Chairman India Subcontinent Arvind is responsible for Leo Burnett operations in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Arvind is an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. After spending the first two years of his career in marketing, he joined his first love- advertising. Over the years, Arvind Sharma has been associated with brands like Ariel, Coca-Cola, Chevrolet, Fiat, Goodyear, Hitachi, Heinz, McDonald’s, Old Spice, Pillsbury, Tide and Vicks Vaporub. His clients also include large local Indian groups like Bajaj, Godrej, HDFC, Reliance and Tatas.

Leo Burnett India’s creative product has received global acclaim at all the major international advertising award festivals- including New York Festival, London Festival, Clio, D&AD and Cannes. From among a hundred odd agencies in the Leo Burnett network from Chicago to Europe to Japan, Leo Burnett India was named Burnett’s global agency of the year for 2003.

Arvind Sharma personally has been the copywriter behind a number of transformational campaigns in India- the campaign for launch of Ariel in India for Procter & Gamble, the 'Common man' campaign that brought the Congress-led UPA government in India to power.

Arvind Sharma has just completed his term as Chairman of Media Research Users Council of India. He was Chairman of Goafest Committee of Advertising Agencies Association of India and is a member of the Board of Governors of Advertising Standards Council of India. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of Education Support Organization- an NGO involved in innovation in education at the primary school level that is currently educating over 10,000 children.

Arvind is a regular columnist on business, marketing and advertising issues and a guest faculty-member at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad and other major business schools in India

Arvind's other interests include his children- Ishita, 20 and son Akshay, 19- both studying in the US. And travelling & reading.
