Akash Deep
Senior Lecturer in Public Policy, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University – Moderator

Akash Deep is Senior Lecturer in Public Policy specializing in finance and cochair of the Indian Administrative Service Executive Education program. His expertise lies in financial risk management and derivatives, infrastructure project finance, and the management and regulation of banks and financial institutions. Deep teaches finance, risk management, and infrastructure finance in the degree and executive programs. He has provided advice on bank restructuring and infrastructure financing to various governments and firms. He has worked in the financial institutions and infrastructure section of the Bank for International Settlements in Switzerland and served as consultant to the World Bank and United Nations. Certified Financial Risk Manager by the Global Association of Risk Professionals, Deep holds a PhD in economics and an MA in operations research from Yale University and a bachelor's degree from the Indian Institute of Technology.

  Sanjay Bhatnagar
Chairman & CEO, THOT Capital Group

Sanjay Bhatnagar is the founder of the THOT Capital Group. THOT Capital Group is active in
green-field infrastructure development and asset buy-outs mainly focusing on energy and water
sectors. THOT also manages a foreign exchange fund.

Prior to setting up the THOT Capital Group, Mr. Bhatnagar was the CEO of Enron Broadband
Services for Middle East and Asia based in Singapore and was responsible for developing Enron’s
telecommunication businesses in the region.

Mr. Bhatnagar was also Chairman and CEO, Enron South Asia where his responsibilities included
developing and financing energy infrastructure. Mr. Bhatnagar was the Lead Developer of the
2,184-megawatt Dabhol Power project in India, which began commercial operations in May
1999. In this capacity, Mr. Bhatnagar helped raise over $1 Billion in equity and $2 Billion in debt
financing from Indian and International financial institutions including EXIM, JEXIM, OPIC and
over 25 International commercial banks.

Before joining Enron in 1993, Mr. Bhatnagar worked for Schlumberger, the oil field services
company, as an engineer and manager in several countries including Brunei, Singapore,
Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia and France. His responsibilities ranged from
project development and management to marketing and operations.

Mr. Bhatnagar received an MBA with Honors, from Harvard University in 1993, a Master’s degree
in Engineering from Stanford University in 1989 and a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical
Engineering with distinction from the Indian Institute of Technology in 1983.

Construction Company active in over 19 countries.

Sandeep Katwala
Head of India Group, Partner, Linklaters

Sandeep has more than a decade of “on the ground” experience in India since his involvement, beginning in 1992, with the Dabhol Power Project. Since this time he has advised numerous clients on their investments into India and also advises India companies on the expansion of their activities outside of the region. He heads the firms dedicated India Group which operates from our London, Hong Kong, Singapore and increasingly our European offices. Over the last few years the India Group has been involved in some of the largest and most complex India related transactions such as advising Vodafone on its acquisition of Hutchison Essar; India’s largest inward investment; advising the arrangers of facilities to fund Tata Steel’s public bid for Corus plc: India’s largest overseas investment; advising on two of the largest IPOs in Indian history: DLF Limited (US$2.2bn) and Cairn India Limited (US$1.9bn); and advising on the $1bn convertible bond issue by Reliance Communications , the largest ever equity-linked issue out of India.
In addition to the above examples of the kinds of deals on which Sandeep has been involved include:

- The Vodafone Group Plc on its acquisition of an interest in Bharti Tele-Ventures;
- The sponsors and project company on the development and financing of Phase I and Phase II of the largest privately financed power plant in Asia (2014MW) at Dabhol;
- Merrill Lynch on the increase of its interest in its Indian joint venture with DSP Financial Consultants;
- The sponsors on the privatisation of the Bangalore Airport; the first international airport to be privatised in India;
- Numerous investment banks on proprietary investments in Indian companies in many sectors including infrastructure, telecommunications and retail;
- An international mining company on its proposed acquisition of an Indian listed company;
- A US private equity group in its acquisition of an interest in an Indian hospital project;
- BT in its acquisition of an Indian telecoms company;
- Advising Siemens, Unique and Larsen & Toubro on the pioneering development and financing of the Bangalore International Airport;
- Advising the Mayne Group on its joint venture arrangements with Zydus/Cadila Healthcare;
- Advising a corporate in connection with a proposed purchase of an equity stake in a major energy project; and
- Advising a consortium bidding for the privatisation of the Mumbai/Delhi airports.

Satish Mandhana
Managing Director - Investments – IDFC Private Equity

Satish has over 25 years of private equity and corporate finance / business strategy experience. At IDFC PE he is involved with firm’s investments in infrastructure space. He was earlier a Director of CDC Advisors (now Actis – an emerging markets PE Fund) where he was involved in many important investments and exits such as privatisation of Punjab Tractor and initial capitalisation of IDFC. He was also CFO and Head of Business Strategy at JK Paper, where he raised USD 177 million funds including private equity and was involved with company’s Carbon sequestration initiative. As head of Investment Banking at SRF Finance (now part of GE Capital) he set up the Structured Finance, Corporate Broking, Investment Banking and Private Equity practice of the company and led the company in the areas of securitisation, advisory and investments. Prior to joining the financial sector in 1992 he worked with SRF and Eicher, where he was responsible for assessing and creating new businesses. He is a member of working group on Power for Eleventh plan (2007-12) of Government of India and member of Economic Affairs and Taxation Committee of Confederation of Indian Industries (CII). Satish received an MBA from the Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi University, and a BE in Industrial Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee and is passionate about promoting green infrastructure.

Sanjay Reddy
Vice Chairman, GVK Group

Mr G V Sanjay Reddy holds multiple positions and plays a key management role
in the Hyderabad based GVK, which is amongst India's largest infrastructure
developers with experience and expertise spanning areas such as Power, Toll
Roads, Ports, Airports, SEZs and Urban Infrastructure. GVK’s business also
spans across hospitality, services and manufacturing.

As the Vice Chairman of GVK Industries Limited, Mr Reddy has been responsible
for the successful implementation of various projects in the country, prime among
them being the Jegurupadu Combined Cycle Power Plant, India’s first
Independent Power Plant.

As the Managing Director of Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL), Mr
Reddy is currently responsible for planning and implementation of the
modernization of Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA), India’s busiest
airport. A challenging infrastructure project, CSIA is being upgraded to cater to 40
million passengers with an investment of US$ 2.25 Billion.

He has also been instrumental in starting GVK Biosciences in 2003, which he
currently spearheads as the Managing Director. In a short span of time, GVK
Biosciences has become one of India’s leading contract research companies.
He is also on the Board of Directors of the TajGVK Hotels & Resorts Ltd and his
contribution to the project of Taj Residency, Hyderabad, in the capacity of
Managing Director, till the year 2000 has been significant.

Mr Reddy was named among 25 Indians chosen as Young Global Leaders 2007
by the World Economic Forum and was primarily selected for his professional
accomplishments, commitment to society and the potential to contribute to
shaping the future of the world.

He actively participates and contributes to various causes through forums and
bodies like Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Young Presidents’ Organisation
(YPO) and the prestigious Jagdish and Kamla Mittal Museum of Indian Art.
Educated in the United States, he combines his professional expertise and
knowledge with a global perspective and a practical approach to business. He
holds a Bachelors degree in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University and an
MBA from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
